Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik (also known as Dr. Eggman or just Eggman) is an evil scientist and dictator who seeks to rule over the entire world. He is ever persistent in his quest for world domination despite his constant losses at the hands of his most hated enemy Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies. After his most recent scheme went awry, Eggman has lost his memory and taken up residence in an idyllic town under the new alias of "Mr. Tinker".
Dr. Eggman had been battling Sonic and his friends for some time. Their earliest known conflict was when Eggman released the creature known as Chaos from the Master Emerald and tried to control it. Piloting his Egg Viper mech, Eggman lost the battle against Sonic before an enraged Chaos, who powered up into its Perfect Chaos form, betrayed Dr. Eggman, Sonic transformed into Super Sonic and defeated the angry guardian. Dr. Eggman would then go on to read of his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik's, creation, Shadow the Hedgehog. In another attempt to conquer the world, Eggman released Shadow from his stasis and the two of them, along with their ally, Rouge the Bat, wound up clashing with Sonic and his friends on the Space Colony ARK where they would all have to team up to stop the Biolizard, which had fused with the station and became the Finalhazard, from destroying the world. Sonic transformed into Super Sonic and Shadow transformed into Super Shadow. After stopping the creature's assault, Shadow plummeted to the planet below and was thought to be dead. Eggman would later find and save Shadow, placing him into stasis until Metal Sonic copied the data of Chaos and transformed into Neo Metal Sonic, impersonating Dr. Eggman and locking the doctor away. Rouge would then infiltrate one of Eggman's bases and release Shadow from his stasis as well as one of Eggman's rogue Badniks, E-123 Omega. Dr. Eggman would contact the Chaotix Detective Agency anonymously and hire them to defeat Neo Metal Sonic, telling them it was actually Eggman that they were fighting against. Thus Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Rose, and Team Chaotix each had their own reason for stopping the imposter, who they thought was Dr. Eggman. One of Team Sonic's encounters was with the Egg Emperor piloted by Neo Metal Sonic, who they still thought was Dr. Eggman, but they succeeded in defeating it. Eventually, Neo Metal Sonic transformed further into Metal Madness, and everyone, including the real Dr. Eggman who had been freed, had to team up to take down the rampaging robot. After it transformed further into Metal Overlord, Sonic transformed into Super Sonic and, together with a powered up Knuckles the Echidna and Miles "Tails" Prower, stopped the transforming tyrant, who reverted back into its regular form as Metal Sonic. Eggman would then attempt to sneak away from the heroes, as he had no intention of paying the Chaotix, but the detectives chased down Eggman after realizing this. (StH: #1; VG: SH)
When the Black Arms invaded, Eggman was on his own side fighting against both the heroes and the villainous extra terrestrials. When Eggman, inclusing Sonic and his friends, found themselves paralyzed by spores, Shadow the Hedgehog, who was immune, faced off against the alien leader, Black Doom. After Black Doom transformed into Devil Doom, Shadow transformed into Super Shadow and defeated the monster and destroyed the Black Comet where the aliens resided saving Eggman and everyone else. Eggman would return to his evil ways and split the planet apart in order to release Dark Gaia from its core and in the process drain the Chaos Emeralds and transform Sonic into the Werehog. After Sonic met up with an amnesiac Light Gaia who he named Chip, the two would work together to restore the emeralds and the planet to normal. Eggman piloted his Egg Dragoon and fought against Sonic and lost. Then Sonic transformed into Super Sonic and fought Dark Gaia, who then transformed into Perfect Dark Gaia. Sonic, along with Sonic's new friend, Chip, which was actually an amnesiac Light Gaia, then teamed up to fight off the creature and Chip returned to his dormancy. (StH: #1, #5; VG: SU)
Later, Eggman built an interstellar amusement park that used the power of the Wisps. Sonic freed their world, Planet Wisp, from Eggman's control and saved the kind creatures, putting a stop to Eggman and destroying his park. (StH: #3; VG: SC)
Following this, Eggman discovered the Time Eater and used its powers to mess with time and team up with a past version of himself to stop Sonic and a past version of himself. After the two Sonics saved their friends, they used the Chaos Emeralds to turn super and stop the two doctors and defeat the Time Eater, returning everything back to normal, but stranding both doctors in the White Space. The two doctors would eventually find their ways back to their own respective worlds, and Eggman would resume his villainous plans. When he found a way to control the Lost Hex's native Zeti creatures known as the Deadly Six, he would resume kidnapping animals to create more Badniks. Sonic and Tails followed Eggman to the mysterious floating continent, where they would face off against the Deadly Six. A confrontation with Eggman would cause him to lose control over the creatures, in which the angry locals rebelled. Eggman teamed up with Sonic to stop the six Zeti, who attempted to destroy the world. Thankfully, Sonic stopped the villains and the day was saved. (StH: #3; VG: SLW)
More recently, after getting ahold of a mysterious artifact known as the Phantom Ruby, Dr. Eggman defeated and captured Sonic and conquered the majority of the planet. Thanks to the help of the Resistance (formed by Sonic's friends and allies and comprised of many more soldiers), other allies, and a past version of himself from an alternate reality, Sonic was freed and helped to stop Dr. Eggman's conquest and save the world from his clutches. This ended in a confrontation between Sonic and Eggman, the latter piloting his latest Death Egg Robot. (StH: #1)
Eggman and "Mr. Tinker"
After his Phantom Ruby plan fell through, Eggman vanished without a trace, though his Badnik’s continued to opperate on their own. As Sonic and his friends worked to stop the fallout of their recent war, the Chaotix Detective Agency launched their own investigation to find the Eggman. After recieving a tipoff from an unknown source (later revealed to be Rouge the Bat), the Chaotix tracked down Eggman to a village where he was living a new life as the kindly "Mr. Tinker". As explained by the head of the village, an unconsious Eggman suddenly appeared in the village one day. They locked him up immediately, only to return the next day to find that he’d broken out, to fix up the door to his own cell. The doctor was put through numerous tests, where it was determined the dictator had no recollection of his old, villainous life. After nursing his wounds, the village took "Mr. Tinker" in as one of their own, who repaid their kindness by fixing anything they brought him, even going as far as to build them windmills. Though considered a blessing by the townspeople, Sonic was not convinced, that is, until the hedgehog caught Tinker hiding in fear from a badnik attack with fellow citizens. After helping the Chaotix to do away with the badniks before they could reach the village, Sonic had accepted that Eggman really had changed. Sonic prepared to speed off to his next destination, only to become alarmed when Tinker expressed his hope that the hedgehog would come back to visit so that he could show him "Eggman Land" once it’s completed. Sonic could barely begin to dwell upon what he’d just heard, when Shadow the Hedgehog and Rouge showed up with the intention of destroying the doctor. Sonic fought Shadow to a standstill as the hero tried to convince his shady counterpart to spare the doctors life due to his believed amnesia. After realising that Sonic had lured him away from the village, Shadow returned to the village to find Tinker in hiding, with Rouge watching over him. The hedgehog abrasively demanded that he show him "Eggman Land", to which Tinker complied: he took the heroes to a cabin that held a kids play area that he'd been constructing in secret. Tinker explained that name "Eggman Land" came to him while constructing it, and believed it to be a ridiculous-sounding name that the kids would find funny. The heroes were once again reassured of Tinker’s situation, though Sonic still worried that his recollection of "Eggman Land" was a sign that his memory could eventually return. (StH: #1, #5, #6)
While all of this was taking place, a mysterious figure was keeping a watchful eye on Sonic’s actions from a secret location while concocting his "master plan", with Orbot and Cubot by his side. From an armchair, he watched on a surveillance monitor as Sonic saved village after village from badnik attacks and, eventually, as Sonic tracked down and tried to assess Mr. Tinker. Afterward, the figure, revealing himself to he a second Dr. Eggman, rose from his chair, stating that it was time for him to join the Egg Fleet, as it was time to move on to the next phase of his master plan... Dr. Eggman is depicted as a human with a rotund and burly appearance, his torso and head coming together in an egg-like shape. He possesses no visible neck, a bald head, a bright red nose, and a very bushy mahogany moustache. He also has long, almost disproportionately thin arms and legs.
For attire, Eggman wears tinted, navy blue pince-nez glasses and green-lensed goggles as headwear and an elegant, red coat sporting two square metal buttons on both sides of the chest in gold. These buttons have white straps that run across the coat's sides to identical buttons on the back. The coat also has silver, zipper-like linings down the back, arms and front, yellow cuffs, and two extensions on the front that have large silver buttons. In addition, Eggman also wears white, cuff-less gloves on his hands and a pair of black pants with matching boots seemingly attached to them bearing circular plates on the both sides of the ankles and three square ones riding up the shin.
After losing his memory and gaining the new alias "Mr. Tinker", Eggman began to wear green overalls, a pink shirt, and pink and green slippers.
Dr. Eggman is an evil and megalomaniacal genius who is constantly planning to take over the world. Arrogant, raucous and narcissistic, he prefers to show up and claim responsibility whenever he is carrying out his villainous deeds and make himself known to his enemies after he comes back from a defeat; as put by Sonic, subtlety is not Eggman's forte.
As Mr. Tinker, Eggman displays a very different disposition, being a friendly, humble and modest man who loves children and helping others out. Mr. Tinker also displays a somewhat cowardly streak, being afraid of his own robots, although it does not keep him from helping and comforting the innocent.
Eggman is a brilliant scientist and inventor with seemingly limitless mastery over technology. His remarkable skills as an engineer and programmer are best evidenced by the armies of robots and mechs he has created for his numerous schemes. He is also an incredibly skilled pilot: able to manipulate many different kinds of his own mechs, robots, and vehicles in difficult battles with Sonic.
- Head writer Ian Flynn has revealed on Twitter that Eggman's measurements are the same as those of his game counterpart.
